In refugee settings, wood fuel significantly contributes to host and displaced populations’ food security and livelihoods. Therefore, it is crucial to find solutions that can enhance wood fuel’s socio-economic benefits, while minimizing its contribution to forest degradation and deforestation.

Women in Cameroon’s East Region bear responsibility for feeding their families, but a massive influx of refugees from the Central African Republic has increased competition for natural resources, making it harder to find firewood for their daily energy needs.

Located strategically between Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa, Kitui County has long been one of Kenya’s most important charcoal production hotspots.

The local economy is mostly based on agriculture, but for farmers charcoal production is an important coping mechanism to secure a year-round income, particularly during the long dry season that lasts from May until October.

In 2005, there were only six forestry specialists with a postgraduate degree in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Fast-forward to 2020, and the number has increased to over 220 with master’s and doctoral degrees. In addition, there are many more skilled technicians who are highly qualified to sustainably manage the country’s vast tropical forests.

The circular economy is an economic and industrial model that keeps products, including their components and materials, in circulation for as long as possible to promote sustainability.

In this system, the components of an end-of-life product are used over and over again to recreate value, and industrial, agricultural, and household residues are recovered to make new products. This system therefore keeps waste and use of resources to a minimum.

Southeast Asian nations are preparing for the possibility of an environmental emergency, exacerbated by the health crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Poised on the brink of the regional wildfire season — which usually peaks in August and September — researchers, officials and civil society groups are concerned that the impact of the pandemic could boost the incidence and severity of uncontrolled fires, if mobility limitations and stretched resources get in the way of prevention and firefighting efforts.

The spread of diseases from animals to humans—called zoonoses—is a public health issue as evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. As efforts to curb pandemic accelerate, many conservationists are welcoming China’s move to outlaw hunting and consumption of wild animals. Yet, the ban may put millions of forest dwellers at risk from food insecurity, as Indigenous or rural communities often consume wild meat as their main source of protein.

The illegal trade in rosewood is a lucrative business affecting much of Southeast Asia and parts of Africa and South America. Demand started to increase in West Africa 10 years ago and exports soared from zero to hundreds of millions of dollars. The exploitation of the red-hued hardwood, which is often used in furniture making, is causing environmental and socioeconomic hardship.
